A once-dark and neglected vacant lot on Jalan J Bawah in Kebon Baru Urban Village, South Jakarta, has been transformed into a child-friendly public space featuring a playground, green open space, and an urban farming area, creating a safer, healthier, and more productive environment for the local community.

Kebon Baru Urban Village's Economic and Development Section Head Desti Handriani said the area was previously in poor condition, with inadequate lighting and overgrown trees making the area feel dark, isolated, and unsafe.
Lagoa’s Bogasari Park Levels Up Its Child-Friendly Space"Because the area was dark and poorly maintained, residents were concerned it could attract criminal activity. It was also frequently used as a gathering place for teenagers, so we worked with the local residents to revamp the area," she said.
Desti explained that the revamp began in late March 2026. The initial phase included tree pruning, paving block installation, and improvements to the open space.
"In April, we planted various types of vegetation, built park benches, and installed children's play facilities," she added.
According to Desti, 10 Public Infrastructure and Facilities Handling (PPSU) personnel were involved in the project. In addition to building a mini playground, they created nature-themed murals and developed an urban farming area to support local food security.
"The site is now home to a variety of ornamental plants, productive crops, and medicinal plants, including turmeric, lemongrass, and betel leaves. These not only enhance the area's appearance but also serve as an educational resource for the community," she emphasized.
Desti expressed hope that the revamped area would become a safe and comfortable public space while also serving as a learning space for residents. She added that the brighter, more organized environment is expected to reduce the risk of crime and discourage misuse of the vacant land.
"We hope these facilities will be well used by residents and continue to serve as a safe, comfortable, and valuable community space," she said.
Meanwhile, Kebon Baru resident Arif Rahman welcomed the transformation and expressed hope that more vacant lots in the neighborhood would be revitalized to prevent negative activities and illegal dumping.
"The concept is excellent and well thought out. Hopefully, the area will no longer be used for negative activities," he said.
